The aim of each application is to achieve a reasonably uniform distribution of the bait droplets in the zone, attractive to the pests. The most suitable technique for this purpose are flat injector nozzles.

In the case of the SWD, which also migrates from the surrounding area and can start laying eggs immediately afterwards, rapid absorption and killing within 24 hours are prerequisites for good control success. Therefore, care should be taken to ensure good distribution of the bait combination. The droplets should be placed in the immediate vicinity of the fruit. An attracting effect over a distance of more than 10 cm is not given!


Bait application for fruit flies

Such a coarse-drop application is recommended only for the control of fruit flies such as Cherry Fruit Fly or Walnut Husk Fly. The biology of fruit flies allows a longer period for the insecticide to be absorbed during control. An application of fine droplets is also possible for fruit flies.

Blower switched off or on lowest setting:

Any sprayer is suitable for application. For application in soft fruit, two nozzle holders per side are equipped with injector nozzles (preferably IDK 120- 01 (orange)). In very dense stands it is recommended to work with light air support of the blower.


In stone fruit, the bait liquid can be applied with a nozzle as described for soft fruit with slight air support. Alternatively, especially for higher trees, such as Tartcherries or 5 m spindle plants, spray nozzles without air support can be used. For this purpose, an ATR nozzle white or brown (left) is modified by spacer discs (also called shims, see below), which are inserted between the nozzle body and nozzle insert. The spacers have a total thickness of 0.6 mm. Instead of this nozzle, it is also possible to use a metering plate or, if not at hand – injector nozzle metering inserts (suitable here are, among others, the models of Albuz AVI , LECHLER IDK) with an opening from 01 (orange) to 02 (yellow). The spray jet is directed to the top of the tree.

For trees up to 5 m tree height, one modified ATR nozzle per side is sufficient. Depending on the width of the rows, the nozzle is inserted at the bottom of the nozzle holder (in narrow rows, the nozzle can also be crossed, i.e. spraying from the bottom right towards the left tree tip). The spray curtain of bait droplets should be applied over the entire tree if possible.
A combination with injector nozzles directed into the area of the base branches is also possible.

A metering plate (without swirl disc) or, better, an Albuz ATR 80 0.075 hollow cone nozzle modified with spacer discs (0.6mm total) (left) is used on the lowest nozzle holder to spray below the grape zone with a full jet into the neighboring row of vines. The full spray ruptures due to the travel speed and medium-sized droplets are produced. In this way, four rows of vines can be treated against the cherry vinegar fly with one pass!
The middle nozzle holder (at the height of the grape zone) is equipped with an injector nozzle – preferably IDK 120-01 (orange). Herewith the grape zone and the lower foliage area are covered with bait droplets in the traveled row.
Faster and cheaper, with the same technology, use a Quad (ATV)!

Spray application FOR


A simple crop protection pressure sprayer can be used for bait application. For cherry vinegar fly control use IDK nozzle or adjust spray jet for similar drop pattern.

For walnut fruit fly control, remove swirl insert from nozzle and apply as a spot spray.

Mixing combi-protec

Premix combi-protec® Insect Bait  with warm water (1:1, max 40°C) before adding to the spray tank. Always fill first water to the premix bucket, before adding combi-protec® Insect Bait. Stir immediately. For full cover sprays, fill spray tank ½ full of water and begin agitation. Add pesticides as directed by label. Add combi-protec® Insect Bait as a premix last and continue agitation until spray solution is completely mixed.

1. spray quantities below 100l please enter with +/- buttons, then 20 and 40l are also possible.

2. enter number of nozzles 2 or 4

3. enter row spacing. Please note- in case of treatments on only one side of the foliage wall, the double row width must be entered.

4. enter maximum possible travel speed depending on equipment type and plant condition.

5. read off the operating pressure to be set on the nozzle under the recommended nozzle size “01” for the IDK 90- 01. To obtain a correspondingly coarse droplet spectrum, the value should be around 3 bar.

For the nozzle combination of IDK 120-01 and the modified ATR nozzles, refer to the reading below the table. For the modified ATR nozzle in white, please adopt the setting -02 and thus determine the spray pressure to be set at the travel speed specified above.

With such small amounts of insecticide - doesn't that increase the risk for resistance?

No. The regular application rate of the insecticide specified in the approval for a water quantity of 20 or 40 liters of spray broth is used in the combination method. This insecticide quantity is also not distributed over the entire surface, which could actually be problematic in terms of resistance formation. The increased oral uptake with combi-protec leads to a significantly higher effectiveness of the insecticide on the target object, which is also confirmed by the test results. According to American scientists, the risk of resistance for SWD is generally considered to be low. For the active substances from the pyrethroid group, there is a much higher risk of resistance development.

Why should I use combi-protec before rainfall - it will be wash off, won't it?

Yes, that is the case. But the rainfall leads to perfect oviposition conditions and to a higher egg production of the SWD. Therefore, the control measures one to two days before rain events get an increased importance, because thus the flies are killed in the crop! Even small populations are able to cause damage under these conditions! If treatment is carried out only after the rain, the maggots will continue to develop since no curatively effective agent are available in every state short before harvest and the infestation will build up. The intervals between treatments must therefore be reduced by 1 – 2 days only in the case of very heavy infestations.
For both bait and full cover sprays, reduced efficacy is to be expected after precipitation. Rainfall of 10- 15 l/m² are sufficient to wash off the spray coatings or bait droplets. This has also been proven in American studies for the products just advertised as “rainproof” ( In the USA, in SWD control, for all product groups, repeat treatments are recommended after 12.5 l of rainfall!

Contrary to the general recommendation, the treatments before precipitation (24- 48 hours before) are classified by us as very important and recommended!

How often can I use combi-protec?

The application frequency of the insecticides in the combination method with combi-protec corresponds to the application frequency of the combined insecticides. Here, the maximum application rate per hectare and year must be observed. This usually results in the specified application frequencies when the full application rate is used. In practice, these are often exceeded when using lower application rates per hectare and application. Splitting applications of herbicides are an example of this.  But also insecticides are in some cases recommended in this way by the official advice. Even partial area treatments that are applied promptly are generally counted and documented as one treatment.

Are bees attracted by combi-protec?

The composition of combi-protec has been specially designed to avoid attracting bees, bumblebees or other nectar- or honeydew-seeking pollinators. Bee protection is very important to us, and with over 30 years of beekeeping experience, this is understandable. But also scientifically this repeatedly requested point was examined and confirmed. Studies by the State Institute of Apiculture in Hohenheim and Würzburg have carried out field studies, some of which have lasted several years.

Is combi-protec residue-free?

combi-protec is residue-free as a product itself. With the low insecticide quantities, approximately 5% of the maximum residue quantity can be expected as residue immediately after application. In most of the studies available to us, the sample values were already below the analysis limit four days after application.

combi-protec is classified as organic?

If insecticides that are approved for organic cultivation are used, the procedure is organic. Please observe the requirements of the associations and EU regulations. combi-protec is included in the list of operating materials for organic cultivation.


combi-protec is very compatible with plants. Nevertheless, some indications should be observed in the application.

as Tank Mix
  • observe the maximum recommended application rate for combi-protec of 2.5 GAL per acre for tank mixtures and simultaneous use of fungicides.
  • Avoid drip formation as high water volumes and drip noses can lead to stain formation
Bait Spray
  • the spray volume may be increased by a maximum of 50%. Higher amounts of water may cause visible drops on the fruit.
  • Do not mix with wetting agents such as super spriters. The effectiveness is strongly reduced by this!
  • do not mix with foliar fertilizers or other additives
  • no application immediately (6h) before rainfall
  • best time of application for the control of the cherry vinegar fly is in the late afternoon to sunset hours.
